What is an on-board courier?
An on-board courier — also called hand carry — is a courier who travels with the shipment on a scheduled flight. Where airline and security-screening rules permit, the goods are carried as cabin baggage. If checked-baggage handling or a controlled courier handover is required, it is stated and approved as part of the arrangement. Responsibility and every handover are documented across the whole transport chain, and delivery is made to the recipient against signature. It is used when standard air freight cannot make the deadline or when the goods require special oversight.
Feasibility is always governed by airline rules, security screening, customs, export controls, dangerous-goods regulation and destination-country requirements.
Worldwide routes — coordinated from Scandinavia
The assignment does not need to start or end in Scandinavia. We can coordinate a feasible on-board courier route between origins and destinations worldwide — for example Istanbul to New York. Operational coordination is handled from Scandinavia. All assignments are subject to actual feasibility, airline acceptance, security screening, customs, sanctions/export controls, visa/entry and destination-country rules.
Between countries worldwide
Cross-trade between two destinations outside Scandinavia, subject to courier availability, routing and applicable rules.
From Scandinavia
Outbound hand carry from a Scandinavian collection point to an assessed destination.
To Scandinavia
Inbound assignments from an assessed origin to a consignee in Scandinavia.
Time-critical spares
Spare parts and components that must not sit in a terminal system. Handling follows a documented chain of custody from collection to handover.
Documents and sensitive equipment
Original documents, prototypes or security-sensitive equipment that require personal oversight. Where a physical signature or seal must be in place on a given day, handover is made against signature to a named recipient.
How it works
Five steps. We would rather decline than promise something the rules do not allow.
- 01
1. Feasibility check
You describe the goods, weight, dimensions, origin, destination and the latest acceptable delivery time. We check routings, airline rules and any obstacles before quoting a price and a realistic timeline.
- 02
2. Collection and documentation
The courier collects the goods at the stated address, checks the contents against the brief and prepares the documentation the transport and customs require.
- 03
3. Accompanied flight leg
The courier travels with the goods on scheduled flights. Whether the goods may be carried is decided by the airline and security screening at each departure. On long routings, or where working-time and entry rules apply, a controlled handover to a next courier may be required — if so, the handover is documented.
- 04
4. Customs coordination
We coordinate documents with you, your forwarder or your broker and follow the goods through the customs process. We do not act as a customs broker and do not assume declaration responsibility.
- 05
5. Personal handover
The goods are handed to a named recipient against signature. You receive confirmation of time, place and who received them.
On-board courier, air freight or charter?
Three different tools. The choice depends on the time window, the size of the goods and the budget.
On-board courier
- Typical goods
- Smaller pieces one person can carry
- Supervision
- Courier travels with the goods, documented chain of custody
- Departure
- Next feasible scheduled departure with space
- Handover
- Direct to the recipient against signature
- Cost driver
- Tickets, time and routing
Scheduled air freight
- Typical goods
- Pallets and larger volumes
- Supervision
- Handled through terminal and loading chain
- Departure
- According to the airline's freight schedule
- Handover
- Via terminal and local distribution
- Cost driver
- Weight and volume
Air charter
- Typical goods
- Large, heavy or indivisible loads
- Supervision
- Dedicated aircraft, handling per assignment
- Departure
- Subject to aircraft availability and permits
- Handover
- According to the setup at destination
- Cost driver
- Highest of the three
The comparison describes how these transport modes normally work. It is not a commitment on time or price in any individual assignment.
